About Us
Our Goal is to Promote Safe Biking and Awareness in Southern Nevada.
Promote Education and Awareness.
Our Mission is to advocate for safer roadways, better trails, and more biking opportunities in Southern Nevada.
In the aftermath of the December 10, 2020 tragedy, Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition created a three-part education campaign to help achieve our goal of zero collisions on Nevada’s roads. Today, the Coalition’s campaign has buy-in from key stakeholders like local jurisdictions and other advocacy organizations.
Learn more about our “Change Lanes for Bikes. It’s the Law!” campaign, an initiative to raise awareness among motorists of Nevada’s 3-Feet Passing, and stay tuned for the launch of our “Ride Safe” and “Let’s Get There Together” campaigns.
Work With Law Enforcement
Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition continues to partner with local Law Enforcement to amplify the Change Lanes campaign. Several times per year, local Law Enforcement holds enforcement events to raise awareness among motorists of Nevada’s 3-Feet Passing law (NRS 484B.280).
During these events, an officer rides a bicycle with a device that estimates the distance a vehicle is from the rider, and if the distance is less than 3-Feet or if the motorist does not move into an adjacent lane if one is available when passing the officer, then the officer radios ahead and the driver is pulled over and cited, or given a warning and educated about the law.
Be The Voice Of The Community
We work with our local, regional, and state government partners to address bicycle safety in transportation infrastructure projects and planning.
For instance, the Coalition provided the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada input on its 2018 Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, ensuring safe infrastructure designs for all users of the road. We also emphasized the need for improved connectivity between bike routes, lanes, and multi-use trails around the valley.
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sought the Coalition’s input and expertise in revising its training manual’s presentation of the 3-Feet Passing law (NRS 484B.270).
We worked with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to modify its statewide design standard for rumble strips and bike lane width on state highways. The new design standards are now being implemented around the state and on the Mount Potosi Climb (S.R. 160).
We asked the Clark County Commissioners to apply to become a League of American Bicyclist Bicycle Friendly Community. The BFC program provides communities with a roadmap on ways to increase safe bicycling around town. We asked, and they listened. In 2017, Clark County was awarded a bronze level BFC designation. Currently, Clark County and Mesquite are Bronze level, while the City of Henderson and the City of Las Vegas are both Silver level.
From 2019 until its adoption in 2021, we have worked with the City of Las Vegas as key stakeholders in developing the City’s 2050 Masterplan. A long-range master plan is meant to reflect the values of a community to ensure smart growth in the future. Our participation ensured that this plan has the following goal: “Connect and enhance accessible bike and pedestrian facilities as part of a safe, efficient road network that supports all transportation modes throughout the City.”
Advocate Legislative Priorities.
In 2017, we pushed for more substantial penalties for motorists who kill or injure bicyclists while breaking the law.
More recently, we rallied our community to testify in opposition to SB183 – a bill introduced in 2021 that restricts bicyclists from riding on 4,400 miles of Nevada roads.

We need to increase our membership to continue to have a seat at the table and influence our community governments and leaders.
